HSH Nordbank has given its name to the 2007 transatlantic regatta
- The HSH Nordbank Blue Race will run from Newport RI to Hamburg in 2007
Hamburg/Kiel, August 25, 2005 - HSH Nordbank AG will be the new name behind the transatlantic regatta in 2007. The HSH Nordbank Blue Race, formerly the DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge, will start from Newport, Rhode Island in June 2007. The route covering about 3500 nautical miles runs straight across the Atlantic to Hamburg. With this commitment HSH Nordbank has once again underscored its partnership with the sport of sailing. For HSH Nordbank as a strong regional bank of the North and the world’s largest provider of ship finance with a volume of EUR 21 billion the HSH Nordbank Blue Race is a logical extension of its existing support. “To us the HSH Nordbank Blue Race also symbolizes the bridge linking the business at our offices in Hamburg and New York,” HSH Nordbank CEO Alexander Stuhlmann said at today’s press conference held on the premises of the Norddeutsche Regatta Verein (North German Regatta Association). “The interest shown by sailors in another transatlantic crossing is huge. We are pleased to have found such a prestigious and experienced partner,” added Gunter Persiehl, chairman of the Norddeutsche Regatta Verein. More than 50 yachts are expected to take part in the regatta.
The Norddeutsche Regatta Verein, supported by the New York Yacht Club, is the organizer of the HSH Nordbank Blue Race. HSH Nordbank is actively involved in the official process of invitation to take part. The regatta will be open to all yacht categories. Ole von Beust, the mayor and president of the city council of Hamburg, has assumed patronage of the event.
As a supporter of the sport of sailing, HSH Nordbank has since 2004 provided its Race Repair Service (RRS), offering yachtsmen a level of offshore assistance unique anywhere in the world during the Kiel Week, Travemünde Week and Rolex Baltic Week events. The HSH Nordbank Cup (formerly the Blue Ribbon Cup), a regatta from Kiel to Copenhagen and back, dates back to 1998. This race across the Baltic took place again this year, from August 17 to 21. The Real Race, a regatta for the real estate business sector, is a first this year. “Sailing represents sport just as it does challenge, innovation and team spirit,” added Stuhlmann. “These concepts provide an excellent match for our corporate culture.”
Further sponsors have already pledged their support to the HSH Nordbank Blue Race. Those on board include the Hamburg-based underwriters König & Cie., Hamburg Messe (trade fairs organizers), the main sales outlet of Mercedes-Benz in Hamburg and, as equipment suppliers, the sailing-clothing manufacturer Marinepool.
